A delightful place with a lively atmosphere. Great place to go with friends since they have a whole bunch of apps to try out. I went there with some friends and tried the big taste menu.

At the time of writing this it’s already been more than a week since I went so I couldn’t remember the exact details of this app combo. One was a spring roll, one was friend shrimp with a delightful sauce with a little spiciness and I couldn’t remember what was in the middle. Presentation was nice and the taste was very good.

Tuna carpaccio, was very refreshing and the sauce was well done. The chips that came with it were good way to eat the diced raw fish. Not too sour so that the tuna taste was drowned out.

Alberta baseball cut strip loin. Ordered it rare and it came out pretty good. Good taste and flavor and the sauce was good. However I must say that the sauce was really heavy, for some people they want the intensity and the extra flavor but I found it a bit overpowering personally. I had to use less sauce than normal.

Girlfriend had he lamb and bison. The bison was braised and juicy but one friend commented it felt like eating braised beef stew. Not a bad thing really but gives you perspective on the taste and texture. Lamb was standard slices from the loin, satisfying and tasteful. Again there were comments that the accompanying sauces were too overpowering at times.

Ended the night with chocolate amaretto cheesecake. Definitely the best part of the meal and a great way to finish off. Soft smooth and rich are the words I use to describe this delightful thing.

So would I go back? For sure! Great place to go after work or just for an evening out for eats. Not a quiet place so keep that in mind because this place is pretty lively and fun for the taste buds.

Chop Steakhouse: Misses the Cut Slightly

First off, there I want to make sure people understand that Chop is by no means a bad place to eat, the only issue I had of course was that the food quality was not as good as the rest of the experience.
So to start, the environment and decor = excellent. Its a very nice place to be at and it is a comfortable and upscale atmosphere that is still casual so you don’t have to worry about dress code.
Secondly, the service is excellent, hats off to the waitress Tiffany (or I think thats her name) for excellent service, being very attentive and always smiling. It always makes the experience better when the staff there seem to be enjoying things at the very least.
So coming down to the food, we ordered the beef carpaccio as an appetizer, a filent mignon and a prime rib to share. We ended the experience with the raspberry creme brule.
The Carpaccio was very good, looked very elegant and very enjoyable.

The Filet Mignon…was ok. It looked good and the sides that came with it were good but the meat itself just wasn’t the juicy, ultra tender melting taste that I have had before. The taste was there, but it just wasn’t juicy.
Filent Mignon
The prime rib was also ok. It tasted alright but like the filet, just was not juicy. I mean it was decent but the tendons were really tough on the sides (or my knife was too dull), and when I bit into the meat, it didn’t flood or overwhelm my senses with flavour. So in short it tasted fine.
Prime Rib
Dessert was a raspberry creme brule, nice and sweet and was satisfying. Nothing mind blowing here either.

So what does it bring it down to? Well it was fine but I expected a whole lot more for a place that had such excellent service and nice environment. It was a nice place to try out for sure and I’d probably give it another try sometime, but as it stands, there just are better places out there.

Memories: Great Oyster Bar in Toronto

Posted in Food and Drink with tags , , , , , , on August 5, 2010 by fongterence

So today I finally remembered and figured out the lovely oyster bar that I went to when I was in Toronto.

Rodney’s Oyster House.

When I was there I had the pleasure of tasting some of the most interesting oyster choices I’ve ever had, coupled with a great lunch meal. The best thing about Rodney’s was their sauces, boy are those good and as we speak I will be ordering them as I have not tasted such deliciously spicy hot sauce ever. Its not the type that burns your tongue off, but it has great flavour and just makes you want to keep having more. The sauce in question is called “Back from Hell” and if you like oysters or any kinds of shellfish, USE IT!!!

I just thought I’d share this interesting tidbit with everyone, if you are ever in Toronto, visit Rodney’s and try their osyter platters. for those that don’t like osyters, they do all other shellfish along with pastas. Its a place you want to try sometime in your life.
