I always expect good food here and tonight was no different. The sushi and fish was phenomenal!! Ordered the sushi special set and sashimi special set with grilled mackerel and some individuals on the side.

Fish was extremely fresh and tasty! The Saba and hamachi tasted as good as anyplace I’ve ever had.

So yeah of course I’m coming back when I can 🙂

Taiyo Japanese restaurant

Great place in the panorama area. A little tucked away in the creekside mall. The portions are generous and the cuts of sashimi are decent. The grilled mackerel is a great deal as it is succulent and juicy and tastes fantastic. The tuna and salmon and toto were fairly fresh as well and were of standard prices.

Service was good and the environment is bright and friendly. The food came quickly and looked very polished as well.

A good spot for sushi in the area I’d u don’t feel like driving downtown or going over to crowfoot.

Thanks for a pleasant meal taiyo!

“Quick and simple”

Those are the two words I would use to describe this nice place thats slightly hidden away on center street across from the car dealership. Often hidden because of the gigantic Starbucks sign out front, Maruju Sushi I found is quite a nice place for having a quick lunch.

The atmosphere of the place was simple, tables lined up in a small space with several bamboo rooms. Well lit and the the staff was friendly and attentive. It wasn’t very busy when we went though which is curious because the parking lot was filled up.

Me and my gf ordered their lunch specials.

Special A was 10 pieces of Sashimi, soup, salad and a bowl of rice.

Special B was 6 pieces of Sashimi and 6 pieces of Sushi with soup and salad.

On top of that we ordered Saba and Toro.

So the lunch specials, wow. For just $9.95, it was such a great deal. The fish was fresh and tasty and the portion was a fairly good size as well. My 12 piece combo for $10.95 was great as well. Again nothing flashy, but it was all simple and worked well and I was happy with what I got with such a minimal price.

The Toro itself was only just normal. For $2.65 I didn’t expect high grade toro and the texture was a little lacking, but still it was ok. The Saba that my gf had was really good (according to her) and she is a Saba-nut so I’m assuming it was pretty good.

The soup and salad were your standard fair miso and dressing salads. Great for the price though.

Overall, I am quite happy with the choice of lunch today and I would certainly go back to Maruju sushi for lunch especially. I noticed the menu had lots of cooked foods and the table over had ordered a Chirashi which looked really big so I will have to comeback and try this place again for sure in the future.

Another Dinner at Towa Sushi…Yummy

Towa sushi

Hours before going to watch Prince of Persia saturday night (meh movie, maybe worth a watch once). Me and several friends stopped off at Towa sushi for dinner. Of course it HAD to be the weekend and being that there was 7 of us…30-40 min wait time. It was worth it as usual. Theres not many other places we would typically wait that long for a random saturday dinner afterall.

Item 1: Towa Udon
So as custom dictates for me (given my appetite in Japanese restaurants) I order my filler which usually udon and/or ramen. Towa udon is $10 and has some imitation crab meat pieces in it, seaweed, some tofu skin. Overall its nothing too elaborate but it does its job quite well. Nicely cooked udon noodles (al dente for Italians out there) in a rich steamy and tasty broth. There is only the rare occasion where there is less than generous amounts of udon noodles (noodles are cheap anyways). So I was glad to see it was a good amount as I expect normally.

Item 2: Spicy Toro Scallion Roll
If you like chunks of toro you should order this instead of the negitoro roll. Why? Because the negitoro roll has more finely cut (or minced) portions of toro. The only difference here is that you get a little bit of spicy sauce on it as well. The toro was nice tonight and had a slightly sweet taste to it. The rice was at a good temperature and didn’t feel too starchy. The scallions are always a good addition and enhance the flavour of the toro along with the little spicy sauce that is added. I think the roll was like $15 or so for 8 large pieces of sushi roll with good portions of toro.

Item 3: Salmon Toro
For $3.75 I got 2 sushi pieces with Salmon Toro. Nice and pink, slightly on the warm side but fairly good. Salmon toro taste more like Salmon compared to Tuna and Toro. So it was harder to compare salmon toro to normal salmon sashimi. Still not bad, but nothing exciting. I might just go back to ordering Toro sushi next time as it seems Salmon toro texture isn’t too different from the normal sashimi.

Overall, a good dinner. Had fun with friends and the service was good despite it being a fairly busy night. I’d tell you I’d go again, but most people already know this because I goto Towa quite a bit thanks to their generous portions at fairly decent prices. If you like roll combinations, be sure to try out Towa.
